School water discussions
Discussions will be initiated by the North Canterbury Catchment Board with the Department of Education, the Canterbury Education Board, and the Christchurch City Council over water uses and needs at schools. A board meeting yesterday was told that an application had been received from the department for permission to take water from a well to be sunk at Aranui High School for irrigation of the playing fields. “The board would not be inclined to recommend this,” said the water committee chairman (Mr H. E. Connor). “We have had one such issue already, and know of others. People are becoming concerned at the cost of water in such cases, and are looking for alternatives, such as punching another well.”
The board decided to inform the National Water Authority of the application.
Local body offer
No-one rose to the bait when Mr D. B. Dallas indulged in a tongue-in-cheek promotion at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday, to induce someone to take his place as the board’s man on the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority. “This is a golden opportunity for a career ... a season ticket for a ringside seat for one of the most fascinating performances I have seen,” he said. Mr Dalias was reelected, unopposed.
