Pig meats scarce
Pig meats are scarce, and the availability of Christmas hams might be affected. The shortage is the result of a decline in production that became evident oply recently, and which is most marked in the northern part of the North Island.
It is due partly to the continuing trend away from the use of dairy by-products for pig raising with expanding whole milk collections; and partly to the static price paid to farmers for some two years up until two or three months ago, which caused people, faced with rising costs, to quit pigs.
Prices have now risen sharply but there is no prospect of an early improvement in supplies from local sources. According to the Pig Industry Council some pork has been brought in from Canada, and two Australian states are understood to have been cleared for imports.
