RELIEF FOR FIJI
Eleven tons of roofing iron ind four bales of clothing were air-freighted to Auckland yesterday for shipment to Fiji The cargo was offloaded from the United States Starlifter aircraft on Wednesday when it was realised that extra fuel had to be carried, said the secretarymanager of the North Canterbury sub-centre of the Red Cross Society (Mr R. J. Lipscombe) yesterdav.
Mr Lipscombe said that a I donation of SIOOO from the! Catholic Overseas Aid fundi was forwarded to Wellington! to be used for hurricane relief purposes. Finance for the Red Cross
relief programme came from its disaster relief fund, supplemented by aid from the League of Red Cross Societies and various donations. There was no intention of opening a special appeal for the hurricane victims, nor of taking part in a joint appeal with C.0.R.5.0. as stated in “The Press” on Wednesday, he said.
The area organiser for C.0.R.5.0. (Mr R. A. Consedine) said last evening that donations could be sent to j C.0.R.5.0. headquarters in Christchurch. C.0.R.5.0. was acting as relief co-ordinator !and had launched a special appeal, he said.
