Uneventful trading on Australian markets

Prices were generally steady and trading quiet on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Industrial rises outnumbered falls and some issues showed good gains, but mining and oil moves were mixed.

With all sectors showing a lack of support, trading was uneventful, and even the strong recovery in sterling on the London foreign exchange on Wednesday failed to stir buyers. Industrial Equity rose 40c to 740 c and Pioneer Sugar improved 15c to 375 c. C.S.R. gained 10c to 690 c and the B.N.S.W. added four cents at 914 c. The National Bank rose 2c to 405 c after its report. In Sydney B.H.P. was down 5c to 1090 c and Fairymead was 7c weaker at 448 c.

On the mining boards the 5c rise of Bougainville to 225 c was one of the few improvements in this sector. Western Mining, North B.H. and Mount Lyell were all steady in the unresponsive market.

Of the speculatives, Roebourne finished at Wednesday’s price of 300 c after touching 310 c towards the end of the afternoon session. Woodside Burmah pro-

vided the only real interest in the oils sector, with a strong performance; peaking at one stage at 298 c the shares lost a little support late in the afternoon session to settle at 290 c.
