SHIPPING NEWS Shipping indication of Asian trade

Th« emphasis on Asia In New Zealand's trade today was indicated at Lyttelton yesterday. Of the five vessels in port, four of these were from overseas—two Japanese (Japan Kauri and Rinsei Maru), one Dutch (Straat Cumberland), and the modern British refrigerated cargo liner Taupo. Ail are engaged In the Asian trade.

The P and O Line’s Taupo is serving the New Zealand-Japan trade under a Crusader Line charter. The Taupo arrived yesterday. as did the Straat Cumberland. which serves the New Zealand. Indonesia. Malaysia, Thailand trade.

Apart from Asian traders, the i only other caller yesterday was I the Holmdale, which will load ;general cargo and produce for the Chathams. Passengers will include a bull and a heifer cow. The Rangatira arrived last evening.

The Taupo, now berthed at Cashin Quay, recalls a famous name. When the Union Steam Ship Company. Ltd. was founded at Dunedin in 1875, its nucleus ships were the Beautiful Star. Bruce. Maori. Hawea, and the Taupo.

According to a letter received at the Lyttelton office of “The Press” yesterday. from the master of the British cadettraining motor vessel Otaio, this 14-year-old, 12,997 ton, refrigerated cargo liner, which is now on the New Zealand coast, has 53 deck cadets aboard. Her normal complement is 60 cadets. According to Captain F. G. Bevis, this ship no longer carries engineering cadets. Formerly owned by the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ltd. the Otaio inaugurated a joint deck and engineering training scheme for British cadets.

But the complete system of training cadets has now changed, and cadets do less sea training time, but much more shore school training. Even though the Otaio was now’ strictly a P and O vessel, her identity as a cadet training ship had not been lost. Captain Bevis said. The only large-scale cadet ship left in the P and O fleet, she is due at Lyttelton towards the end of this month. A correspondent, H.T.. of Papanui. has inquired why the world “Maru” is used after all Japanese ship names. After hearing versions of many Japanese shipmasters and a Japanese woman in Christchurch. the nearest interpretation seems to be “castle,” “all embracing,” “round.” “total,” “whole,” “universal,” and even a term of endearment. It has been suggested that only a highly qualified Japanese scholar would know the real answer. Broadly sneaking the word “Maru.” in this instance, seems to indicate the universality or global aspect of shipping, but nobody is sure. « ❖ ❖ Ships of the Japan Lines, such as the Japan Kauri now at Lyttelton. have a teal-green funnel with a black top. According to the company, the green symbol stands for “our desire to help and promote our clients* prosperity and the world’s general industrial development through safe, economical and reliable cargo transport.” ARRIVALS Taupo (5.35 am.), 11,866, Capt.
