Secretary of Authority

Mr L. J. Downey, a New Zealander at present working in the PlilUippines was yesterday named secretary of the Racing Authority. His appointment was announced in a press statement here by the president of the authority (Mr H. G. Callam).
Mr Downey is an associate member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and holds a diploma in public administration from the Victoria University of Wellington.
He has held senior positions In the Public Service, the most recent being with the Treasury. At present Mr Downey Is an executive director representing the Government of FIJI. Indonesia, New Zealand, Tonga, and Western Samoa, at the Aslan Development Bank In the Philippines. He has had a wide experience in racing, being at one time Judge for the Nelson Jockev Club and the Napier Park and Carterton Racing Clubs. Successful apprentices.—Murray Cohen and Geoffrey Lee received awards at the break-up ceremony of the Rlccarton apprentices' school last evening. Cohen was Judged the best student In the school, for diligence, conduct, and a high standard of work. Lee won the owners’ and trainers' prize for all-round abll My.
