Residents annoyed at garage decision
Residents near the Creyke Road-Ham Road shops are up in arms about a reported decision of the Town and County Planning Appeal Board, granting permission for the establishment of a garage and service station at 106-108 Creyke Road.
The board’s decision, not Vet generally published, has been conveyed to the parties, including the Waimairi County Council, which got word of it verbally from the county solicitor (Mr J. E. Ryan). There is no way of upsetting the decision unless legal grounds can be found to support an appeal to the Supreme Court. In the meantime, residents have leamt that the applicants, Brecon Developments, Ltd, of Wellington, have applied to the Motor Spirits Licensing Authority for a petrol resellers licence.
Having turned down in 1967 a similar application by Mobil Oil New Zealand, Ltd, to use the site, the council on March 16 of this year declined an application by Brecon Developments, Ltd, to allow the siting of a garage and petrol-station on land zoned Residential A, and now occupied by two houses, on the north side of Creyke Road, immediately ad' nning the shops. The council rejected the anplication as not being in the public interest. At a hearing before a council town planning subcommittee on February 24, objections were made by the
Ilam-Creyke Road Residents’ Committee, 20 petitioners, eight other residents, two nearby garages and the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority. The residential objectors claimed that to grant the application would be contrary to the council’s townplanning scheme, and that it would detract from the amenities and create noise and traffic problems. The authority’s objection was on traffic grounds.
This decision was taken to appeal by the company. The board’s favourable decision lists several conditions which will have to be complied with.
