Ammunition detonated
People in Christchurch who heard a series of deep booms yesterday could have been excused for thinking that a supersonic aircraft was overhead. In fact, the sounds came from West Melton, where Army men were detonating time-expired ammunition — but because of the number of complaints and inquiries, the Army has stopped the work.
The demolition would probably be resumed later at the Tekapo training area, an Army spokesman said.
