FROM STUD AND STABLE Less said the better about record earnings
All the talk about record earnings, revived after Gunsynd’s win in the Cox Plate last Saturday, becomes a little tiresome if explored to its end.
Gansynd was only realising the expectations of most people when he went to the head of the list of stake-earners for Australia and New Zealand with his win last week.
Gunsynd’s win brought his earnings to $235,815, this carrying him past Tulloch, whose tally was $220,247, and even above Tobin Bronze, whose record was swelled by his American efforts to reach $235,551. To achieve his record Tulloch had to win 36 races and fill 16 minor placings; he failed to gain a place only! once in his 53 starts.
Gunsynd surpassed Tulloch’s earning record by win-
ning 25 races and recording; 10 minor placings. But how is one to rate i these horses with Gloaming, and one or two others of I different eras? Like Tulloch, Gloaming missed a place only once. His I
; 67 starts produced 57 wins, ; and nine seconds. And at his Mother appearance he fell at . the start. All that, though, for I earnings totalling only $86,200. What a joke! Having regard to money values in those days corn-
i pared with today it would I not be a wild flight of fancy to say that his earnings today would have come to $500,000. Yet there are 52 stake-winners listed ahead of this galloping machine in Australia and New Zealand. One of these days it will be possible for a horse, and he might be a moderate, to pass Gloaming’s total in little more than three minutes — by winning a race such as the Melbourne Cup or the Perth Cup. This year the winner’s share of the Melbourne Cup is $69,000. The fourth horse earns $3OOO — riches in Gloaming’s day.
