CHILDREN NOT FIT

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 1

The level of physical fitness in one-third of the children at school was low enough to cause concern, Mr F. C. Sanders, a district schools inspector responsible for physical education, told the Auckland Education Board today.

New Zealanders had the feeling that theirs was an open-air country, with beaches, camping, and swimming, and were lulled into a false sense of security that they were fit and had nothing to worry about, said Mr Sanders. Fitness tests applied in schools showed that there was nothing to be complacent about.

“Children are young and active anyway, we say, but that is just not so in the modem world,” Mr Sanders said.

The long cycle rides and walks that children had enjoyed in the past were today denied to many. “The activity levels at all school ages are falling,” Mr Sanders said.
