Mathias fancied at Hutt Park

“The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON.

Mathias, which showed a good deal of promise as a three-year-old, only to have his four-year-old racing curtailed because of injury, looks close to his best again and could take beating in the Otaki Cup, first leg of tonight’s T.A.B. double at Hutt Park. Mathias has had only two runs this season, but both have been in the last two weeks. He was fourth when resuming at Auckland, and then on Saturday evening finished fifth on the first night of the meeting. His run was quite an impressive one. After being slow to begin, he settled in mid-field and then showed up to be sharing third with Rainbow Hall on the turn Rainbow Hall, a fine third on Saturday, looks the one most likely to test Mathias He had a good trail all the way, and may just have been a little late in getting into the clear before finishing fast in the straight. Local Spark has not fared well in the draw. With Battledress scratched, he has the second line to himself, but could still go well if he gets the breaks in the running. He set a scorching pace on Saturday, and then stayed on well to finish second. In spite of his two wins this season, Free Chase has had little in the way of luck in seven of his races, but from No. 1 at the barrier should still be the hardest to beat in the second-leg, the Golden Coast Pace. After running first and second in two starts at Wanganui, Free Chase had no luck during the running of the New Zealand Sires’ Produce Stakes at Te Awamutu or in last Saturday’s second leg.
