TROTTING Field of 14 in $40,000 N.Z. Cup at Addington

A star-studded field of 14 will contest the $40,600 New Zealand Cup at Addington Raceway next Tuesday afternoon. Seventeen horses survived the final payment, but the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s programme committee transferred three out-of-form runners—Pun, Rain Again, and Sassenach —to the Canterbury Free-for-all.

In the past, the club has been widely criticised for allowing unwieldy fields of up to 16 runners, including some which only made up the number, in New Zealand’s premier light-harness event; and its emphasis on quality this year deserves the widest commendation.

There is ample racing at early spring meetings to enable all horses to prove their entitlement to a place in the cup field through placings in invitation or free-for-all events.

Of particular interest in this year’s cup will be the three-pronged challenge from stables in the Auckland and Waikato districts. Bella’s Command, from Pukekohe, Hoover, from Cambridge, and Hundred Pipers, from Kumeu, have all raced with distinction this season, Hundred Pipers having enjoyed two successes, while Hoover has had one and Bella’s Command has been placed. Their form suggests that they will offer more than token opposition to the great depth of class among the Canterbury contenders for a share in the richest stake in the history of the race. The 13 horses on the limit will all start from one line, with Royal Ascort on the extreme outside and Jacquinot Bay and Robalan inside him. At No. 10 is Royal Belmer, which qualified for a start when she held Robalan out by a nose in the Kaikoura Cup on Monday. Royal Ascot will be bracketed with Manaroa, which will start on his own from 24 yards and is the only runner handicapped behind the limit. Manaroa has been back with his Mount Hutt owner-trainer, C. J. McLaughlin, for a fortnight. He is to have a race at the cup trials tomorrow evening and tremendous interest will centre on his performance. Without doubt he is the greatest stayer produced in New Zealand in recent years, and after a run of succes in New South Wales since the start of the season has shown that he has lost none of brilliance or courage.

A feature of the programme is the strong entry from North Island stables. This includes several form runners, and it will be surprising if they fail to measure up to the strong opposition they will encounter at the meeting. Heroic and Gay Marlene are engaged in the Moon Boy Handicap, a race for inter-mediate-class trotters, while Easton Light, Royal Forbes, and Precocious are expected to prove a match for their southern rivals in the Worthy Queen Handicap, the other event on the programme for horses of this gait. Normandale is the lone northerner in the Addington Handicap, while Gramatan, Irish Kiwi, and Scottish Crusader are engaged in the Empire Handicap. Montana Gold, in the Flying Handicap, a race for 2:16 class pacers, is the other northerner engaged on Tuesday. The T.A.B. concession double will be run on the New Zealand Cup and the Worthy Queen Handicap. The on-course concession l double will be run on the Spring Handicap and the Canterbury Free-for-AH.
