AUCKLAND, Oct. 31
An Inland Revenue tax inspector sued his own department in the Supreme Court yesterday, claiming he was entitled to a $39.80 tax refund on money spent on fees and books for an accountancy course at the Auckland Technical Institute.
The action, a test case, was brought by Graham Norman Player against the Commissioner of Inland Revenue. After hearing legal argument, Mr Justice Perry reserved decision.
For Mr Player, Mr L. Renneberg submitted that money spent by employees to further education, thereby improving their ability to perform their jobs, should be tax deductible. He said that Mr Player needed accountancy qualifications before he could advance as a tax inspector.
