Christ's College wins its cricket; rowing fixtures
In spite of a fine innings of 70 by M. Cameron and some stubborn resistance from the middle-order batsmen, Otago Boys’ High School lost to Christ’s College in their annual cricket match which finished yesterday. After its disastrous first innings of 90, Otago gave a much better performance in its second innings and reached 214.
Although Christ’s College lost three quick wickets in chasing the 69 needed for victory, G. Brown (27) and S. Robinson (16 not out), with sensible batting and running, carried their team to victory with 15 minutes remaining.
Scores:— Christ’s College 236/8 dec., and 72/4 (G. Brown 27; C. Fraser 2/17) beat Otago Boys’ High School 90 and 214 (M. Cameron 70, I. G. Hogg 37, B. Brown 25, A. Preston 25; C. Newton 5/39, R. Cowper 4/55). Christ’s College romped home in the 1500 metres race between the schools’ rowing eights in choppy conditions at Kerr’s Reach. From the start Christ’s College began to draw away, and after 500 metres had a two lengths advantage. A sprint over the last 300 metres took its winning margin to about seven lengths.
