Ulyatt gains 12sec lead

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH.

The young Hastings rider, B. Ulyatt, took over the tour lead after the fourth stage, at Otorohanga, in the Dulux six-day road cycling race yesterday.

Ulyatt won the final sprint and took a 14sec advantage over last year’s tour winner, V. Hanaray (Hastings), and M. Hughes (Invercargill), who had been the overnight leader. Ulyatt was third over-all after the first day. He was

content to remain In the bunch early yesterday but improved to take the lead before Te Awamutu where he won the sprint. He won the final sprint ahead of K. Collins (Wellington) and Hanaray.

But there is little between the top group, and only just over three minutes covers the first nine riders on general classification.

Yesterday’s third and fourth stages, which took the field 104 miles from Tauranga to Otorohanga, were relatively quiet, and most riders were content to reserve their strength for the more rugged 112-mile fifth stage today, from Otorohanga to New Plymouth.
