(y Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ! POOLE (England). Wilfred Rhodes, the grand: old man of British cricket, who played his first test; match — captained by W. G.' Grace — in 1898 turned 95 ! on Sunday. The former Yorkshire and; England all-rounder spent the day quietly with friends and' relatives in Poole and took a birthday drink from a tankard presented to him by the Lord’s Taverners. Rhodes, named ‘•Cricketer! of the Century” by the Tav-’ enters five years ago, is the; oldest test match cricketer alive.
Rhodes took more than 4000 wickets during a 33year career in first-class cricket, and scored nearly 40.000 runs.
Rhodes s first test match was W. G. Grace’s last. Even when he was 50, Rhodes was still taking 100 wickets in a season, and in the middle of his career, pannering Jack Hobbs as opening bat, he set up a record that lasted 37 years. Although blind for 20 years, Rhodes still goes to an occasional cricket match in Bournemouth, “watching” with the help of a commentator.
