Manapouri sails, laden, for Hull

The refrigerated cargo liner Manapouri sailed from Cashin Quay early yesterday afternoon on her way, by way of the Panama Canal, to Hull, where she is due on November 24. It is some time since a British overseas vessel left Lyttelton direct for Britain, because of the time lag caused by the British dockers’ strike.

A full ship, with some extra wool as deck cargo, the 11,705ton Manapouri, commanded by Captain F. C. Taylor, will discharge wool, seed and mail at Hull, meat (and a few cartons of eels) at Sheerness, and peas and seed at Avonmouth. « «

A 6362-ton Japanese bulk carrier, the Rinsei Maru, is discharging nearly 2000 tons of Japanese cargo at Lyttelton. This comprises bags of urea (fertiliser), and bulk sulphate of ammonia. The three year old motor vessel, owned by Sanko Kisen K.K. and commanded by Captain Makto Tabuchi, has already discharged at Auckland, and will complete at Timaru and Bluff.

After the Manapouri’s departure yesterday, the only vessels working cargo in port were the Rinsei Maru, the Panamanian - registered, but Chinese-manned Maritime Explorer (formerly Nagaosan Maru, of Japan), and the New Zealand registered Tarawera discharging Victorian oranges. The cargo liner Japan Kauri is due today with Japanese general cargo and will load for return

Foreign vessels calling at Lyttelton are outnumbering British vessels to an increasing degree. These comprise Japanese and Dutch ships particularly, also Scandinavian vessels, numerous “flags of convenience” ships, and in recent times, more and more Russian vessels. * # *
