Windy first day at Timaru show

Th* turnstiles at the Timaru Show Ground* were unmanned today, admittance charges on the first day of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual two-day show having been waived as an inducement to patrons to support "People's Day." The weather was exceptionally hot and windy, the temperature rising to 21deg. at 3 p.m. Earlier, violent gusts of wind deflated stalls, snapped centrepoles in the tent lines, and shifted the wings of obstacles In the ring during the F.EJ. competitions The fun-fair was at a standstill. DO3 trials were held and. thoroughbreds made an early appearance in the section for horses. But the pride of place in the dav went to the hunters in the F E.I. competitions, which will resume tomorrow. A trophv given by London 1 Wooibrokers iN.Z.), Ltd for the: best fleece of its type in the; wool competition was won by Sir G C Hill, of Geraldine. The judge (Mr B D. Taylor, of Timaru) said this was an excellent fleece of 54s quality, a fine crossbred hogget in a section of 50s quality which was also champion fleece of the show.
Today’s results were— Show hunters.—Light-weight: P. Letham’s Te Koa 1, Mrs J. E. McKenzie and Miss J. McKenzie’s Abide 2, I. BeU and Mrs B. Black ie’s Condor 3. Heavyweight: A. L. and Mrs Dunn’s Nightcall 1. Mrs J. N. O’Sullivan’s Moree 2, Mrs B. S. Maley and B. E. Jessep’s Little John 3.
