$10m for completion of road network?

Essential roading work under the master transport plan could cost s3m in 1972-73, compared with an estimated spending of $2.2m this year, according to a report presented to the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority yesterday.

During the year, the Director of Planning (Mr C. B. Millar) pointed out, construction costs had risen 9 per cent, and it was likely that property costs had risen 20 per cent. If estimated costs of completion of the various essential works were adjusted by these percentages, a total of $10.05m remained to be spent, after March 31, 1973. Of this total, the National Roads Board would spend $2.885m on construction, and $1.87m on property. The

municipalities would spend $4.745m, including $1.405m for property,, and the counties would spend $507,000, including $43,000 for property. Mr Millar listed the following works as “essential” after March 31, 1973, to complete the network:— Southern Motorway, including Curletts Road from Blenheim Road to Halswell Road, and forward buying of property. On National Roads Board arterial roads, extend Curletts Road to Yaldhurst Road, the Main North Road from the motorway to Johns Road, a four-lane Main South Road at the Hornby shops. On other arterial roads, Madras Street at Latimer Square, Montreal Street at Cranmer Square, four-lane Waltham Road from Brougham Street to Moorhouse Avenue, four-lane Brougham Street from Waltham Road to Antigua Street, four-lane Jerrold Street from Simeon Street to Augusta Street, four-lane Brougham Street extension to Opawa Road, two-lane Ensors Road from Opawa Road to Ferry Road and _ realign with Aidwins Road, Barbadoes Street at Bealey Avenue, Fendalton Road widening from Harper Avenue to the railway, fourlane Harewood Road to Crofton Street and new two-lane Carmen Road to Russley Road.

On primary 7 roads, realign Carlton Mill Road with Rossal Street, link Disraeli Street to Sandyford Street, extend Byron Street to Colombo Street, improve Waltham Road between Rogers and Hastings Streets, widen Innes Road to one chain, realign the Straven Road-Clarence Street intersection, widen the Bridle Path Road to one chain and Ferrymead and extend Peer Street to Waimairi Road.

New bridges listed were those for Durham Street over the Avon and the railway, and for Montreal Street over the railway and Moorhouse Avenue. Apart from central city traffic control systems, traffic signals were listed for Riccarton Road and Deans Avenue, and Russley Road and Memorial Avenue.
