Durban dock strike
Sir, —“Panda” asks why Africans from Rhodesia, Mozambique, and Bechuanaland (now Botswana), come to South Africa if "wages are so pitiful.” In fact the three main suppliers of labour outside the Republic are Mozambique, Malawi, and Rhodesia. In these three States — two of them ruled by expatriate regimes—incomes are so low and job opportunities so restricted that the males must seek employment elsewhere to survive. In Malawi, with a per capita income of SNZ42, it is Dr Banda’s policy to allow a third of his working males to work outside the country in order to bring in some foreign exchange. There are now several Afri-can-ruled countries, which, without the huge mineral deposits of South Africa or the overseas investment, have achieved a higher per capita income for their people than in the Republic.—Yours, etc., C. W. S. TRUELL. October 29, 1972.
