Water safety
Sir, —In response to telephone calls expressing concern over the drownings of small children, the Canterbury Water Safety Committee again points out the need for constant supervision of little ones playing in or near the water. At the commencement of another bathing season, parents of small children have this further responsibility added to the many others incidental to the raising of a family. Talks and demonstrations on expired air resuscitation are given by the Water Safety Committee, the Canterbury branch of the Royal Life Saving Society, many swimming clubs, the surf life-saving clubs, St John Ambulance Association,
and Red Cross, until it seems that everybody must know the simple techniques for the resuscitation of the apparently drowned. Posters are prominently displayed and thousands of pamphlets have been handed out throughout the country. Further supplies of these may be obtained on application to Mr Allen Lee, chairman of the Canterbury Water Safety Committee, 53 Aynsley Terrace, Opawa, Christchurch, 2. However, constant supervision must be the watchword.—Yours, etc., BRIAN BLACKMORE, For the Water Safety Committee. October 31, 1972.
