Motor-sport week-end
Competition was so close in the Canterbury Car Club’s run of motor-sport last week-end that the winners of the first three places each gained their position by just one point. The over-all winner was B. Bellis (E-type Jaguar), who completed the five events to gain 486 points. S. Calloway (Holden Torana XUI) was second with 485 points, and R. Rutherford (Chrysler Charger) was third with 484. There were 36 entries for the week-end. The Gebbies Pass hillclimb. held on the Saturday, was won by Rutherford, with Calloway second and Bellis third. The trial on Saturday night was won by B. Hessey, with M. Wood second and J. Geary third: none of the eventual overall winners were in the premier piacings. The same applied at the gymkhana on Sunday morning, which was won by T. Faulkner (Fiat 1500) with Miss Adrian Kennard (Spitfire) second, and P. Kearse (Morris) third. The next Sunday event was a “bent sprint” at Ruapuna. which was won by Rutherford, with Bellis second and Calloway third. The final event, a standing quarter-mile sprint, was won by Rutherford’s 300 b.h.p. Charger, with Calloway and Bellis coming next. The latter two cars were separated by only two hundredths of a second.
