Drowning at beach
(N.Z. Press Association)
TAURANGA, Oct. 30. A Tauranga man died in an ambulance after being dragged unconscious from the surf at Arataki yesterday afternoon. In spite of resuscitation efforts for more than three quarters of an hour by surf club members, St John Ambulance men and a doctor, the man — who had gone to the aid of a woman who was in difficulties — died soon after he was placed in the ambulance. He was Raymond Willcock, aged 32, the father of four children, of Tauranga. About 2.30 p.m. Mr Willcock and the woman attempted to float a Kon Tiki fishing raft past the breakers. The woman got into difficulties and when Mr Willcock went to help her he was swept further out by a strong rip. Two surfers paddled out to the man.
