tN.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent; PERTH.
New Zealand will play South Australia in a semifinal match of the Australian and New Zealand knock-out cricket competition in Adelaide on January 14. In Perth South Australia beat Western Australia by 33 runs in an upset victory in the Coca Cola-sponsored tournament.
South Australia was sent in first and scored 204 for nine in its 40 overs after being 24 for three against the West Australian team which included the Australian test players, G. Watson, J. Inverarity, R. Edwards, R. Marsh, D. Lillee, and R. Massie. Western Australia reached 117 for the loss of one wicket, but then, in a dramatic collapse, was all out for 171.
New Zealand won the inaugural tournament three seasons ago. If it wins the semi-final match, it will play in the final on January 21. The other finalist will be the team which emerges successfully from the preliminary matches between Queensland and Tasmania and Victoria and New South Wales.
Scores: South Australia 204/9 <G. Chappell 78, K. Cunningham 63; R. Nicholls 3/28, D. Lillee 2/27, R. Massie 2/29, G. Watson 2/37), Western Australia 171 (K. MeAullay 74, J. Inverarity 23; K. McCarthy 3/27, A. Mallett 2/33, Cunningham 2/20).
