SHOP PAY UP
<N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. The Remuneration Authority has decided on rates to be incorporated in the general retail shop assistants award in areas except part of the Northern Industrial District. The new minimum rate for males at 21 represented a 14 per cent increase, said the authority in a statement today. After initially examining the application, the authority invited the parties to appear before it to justify a proposed 16 per cent increase. The evidence submitted indicated that some updat-
ing of this award was justified having regard to rates in other awards, said the statement. Other factors in the over-all settlement had also been taken into account, but the authority had not been able to accept the submission by the parties that the full increase claimed was warranted. The authority had therefore consented in terms of the Stabilisation of Remuneration Regulations to a male rate of $1 a week less than claimed. Female rates had not been changed. The award has to be ratified by the Court of Arbitration.
