MADE CITIZEN AT LAST
Mrs Olga Lorite, shown above with her husband, Manuel, last evening became a citizen of a particular country for the first time. She and her husband, a Spaniard, were amongst 70 persons who became New Zealand citizens by taking the oath of allegiance from the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering). Mrs Lorite left Russia with her parents, as Stateless persons, when she was one and lived in France during the 19305. She subsequently lived in South America and Spain, where she met her husband. The couple emigrated to New Zealand almost 10 years ago.
After attending the Teachers’ Training College, Mrs Lorite is now taking an arts degree at the University of Canterbury. She speaks Russian, French, Spanish, and English fluently and intends to become a language teacher after graduation. Mr Lorite has worked in the spare parts division of the International Harvester Company ever since the couple arrived in Christchurch.
