Relief for Fiji
Goods worth about $lO,OOO would be sent from Christchurch within 24 hours if an aircraft could be found to carry them to Fiji, said the secretarymanager of the North Canterbury sub-centre of Red Cross (Mr R. J. Lipscotnbe) last evening.
The sub-centre was assembling three tons of roofing iron, more than 300 blankets, clothing, and a quantity of canned fish and meat which would be airfreighted to Nandi. Supplies were requested by the Red Cross co-ordinator in Fiji (Mr R. J. McKerrow) for the relief of hurricane victims.
Gifts of blankets, clothing and money would be received from the public for forwarding to Fiji. The National Council of Churches has indicated that it would give $lOOO toward the cost of relief supplies and Trans Holdings, Ltd, gave 300 blankets yesterday. Mr Lipscombe said that there was “every likelihood” that an aircraft could be obtained for the flight, which would carry up to 10,0001 b of supplies. (Islands damage report, Page 2.)
