Woman responsible for radio contact

A Lyttelton woman, Mrs Leonette Anderson, mother of five children (three boys and two girls), has a responsible role as a radio-telephone contact and watchdog for the Lyttelton fishing fleet. Her husband, Mr Nolan Anderson, an experienced fisherman, owns the Vindex and is often out fishing with the rest of the fleet. In her Oxford Street home, high above Lyttelton’s waterfront, Mrs Anderson had plenty to keep her busy as three of her children live at home. For the last three years she has been running a radio-teleph one set on behalf of the Lyttelton Fishermen’s Association.

Her rigid programme is to switch on most days, from 8.45 a.m. to 9.3 a.m., again from 12.45 p.m. to 1.3 p.m., and later from 5.45 p.m. to 6.3 p.m. Because she does not go out a great deal, and enjoys being at home with a splendid harbour view, Mrs Anderson does not find it a chore. She enjoys it. She will also switch on her set at any other time if requested, and sometimes the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s signal tower which is on a 24-hour watch, requests her to switch on to receive a fisherman’s message. Sometimes she will just switch on by a sudden impulse. She has talked to fishermen near or at the Chathams at times. When she switches on she can hear fishermen talking out at sea amongst themselves. In times of emergency her services are vital. Apart from this, she carries out many mundane tasks for fishermen and their wives. For instance, wives may telephone her to inquire if a craft is coming in, or the expected time of arrival. Fishermen may ask her to inform their wives when they are coming in. But fishermen are human and some things can be forgotten, such as anniversaries or children’s birthdays. Mrs Anderson can work out something on their behalf when men are out at sea. But many times she has to order stores, groceries and so on for fishermen, and carry out a hundred little tasks. She dnes net mind this a bit. This work has normally been performed at Lyttelton by women, nearly always, a fisherman’s wife. In fact, this is the custom all over the country, Mrs Anderson says. ■ ■ E ■ ARRIVALS Saturday Tawanui (5.40 a.m.), 891, Capt. N. J. Woollett, Tauranga (N.S.S.). Maheno (6.5 a.m.), 4510, Capt. C. J.
