RECORD ENTRIES AT AMBERLEY SHOW

About 2200 people attended the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s seventieth annual show in fine weather, marred only by a cool breeze, at the Amberley Domain on Saturday.

The gate-takings amounted to $486, an increase of $59 on the gate-takings at the show last year.

A completely new layout of the Amberley Domain, ensured a smoothly-run show, and the jumping events finished early because of the double show ring.

A new building has replaced the large tents used in previous years for produce displays and competitions, in which there were again a large number of entries.

Record entries were received in most classes at the show. A total of 524 ponies were entered, 48 more than last year. There were 198 horses, an increase of 23, and 513 sheep, an increase of 94. Only three classes showed decreases. They were: dogs, grain and seed, and produce. Entries, with entries last year in parenthesis, were: cattle, 54 (52); wool, 32 (18); dogs, 19 (25); grain and seed, 94 (117); produce shed, 279 (403); junior section, 1166 (875). Led ponies Mr A. G. Green, the judge of the led ponies and harness horses, said entries in these classes were uniformly good. He was particularly impressed with the two-year-old led-pony classes. The judge of the light horses. Mr S. S. Boon, of Dunsandel, eaid entries were affected by the Ashburton show’s being held on Saturday. However, the top horses at the Amberley show would hold their own at any! show, he added. “Many of the top horses are taken on the whole circuit of shows to get different opinions — each judge has got his pet points,” he said. Beef cattle The judge of the beef cattle, Mr P. Le Cren, of Parnassus, < said that in view of the high quality of some of the prizewinning entries, it was a pity that there was not more competition. "It is very nice to see beef cattle taking part in local shows, as they make up such a big proportion of the economy in the province,” he said. Wool section Outstanding corriedale hogget fleeces and a corriedale ram were remarked on by the judge of the wool section (Mr K. M. Collins, of Christchurch). “The over-all showing in the wool classes was very creditable, considering the wet winter,” Mr Collins said. CHAMPIONSHIPS Horses Champion harness horse: C. I. and L. J.
