RECORD SHOW TAKINGS AT ASHBURTON

Brilliantly fine weather tempered by an easterly wind attracted large crowds to the ninety-fourth annual Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association show on Friday and Saturday.

The gate-takings were a record at $2132 for the two days, with the takings on Saturday of $1993 being $445 up on the same dav last vear.

The takings for last Friday were 5139 compared with 553 collected on Friday last year, a wet day.

Another record was set this year — the number of lost children. Officials expect to broadcast calls for five or six lost children during a show, but this year they lost count of the number of children who became separated from their families. Horse entries, always high at Ashburton, were a record this year at 1507, well above the previous highest figure of 1342, in 1969. Some entrants spend as much as 340 on entry fees with many of the South Island’s leading horses taking part. This year the mobile agricultural machinery, cars and trucks, which formed a large part of the show, did not take part in a parade which made matters much easier for the organisers and allowed the show programme to finish at a reasonable time. Always popular with the crowd, a polo match finished the day, and an innovation for Ashburton was an axeman’s event which attracted considerable attention. Quality of stock Judges generally praised the high quality of the stock. The Romney ewe of I. R. Oakley. of Mayfield, which took the award for the best wool, was especially praised by the Romney judge (Mr L. Geddings. of Fairlie). He said the leading sheep in the Romney section Were very good, but expressed disappointment at the standard of the natural-condition classes. The Corriedale judge. Mr A. E. Cross, of Oxford, said the standard was equal to that expected at the Christchurch Show for the leading animals. The sheep had been exhibited in exceUent condition. The standard of the Merino sheep was high, but the entries In this section had been disappointing, said the Merino judge (Mr C. Gallagher, of Mayfield). He said the champion ram, exhibited by Mr J. R. Todhunter. and the champion ewe. of Mr A. A. Urquhart were outstanding specimens of the breed, and were in the leading New Zealand class. English Leicesters. which the judge (Mr J. R. Todhunter) said had been "fading a bit’ ’in other shows, produced some strong competition at the Ashburton Show, with the quality particularly high. The champion ram of H. Bennett had impressed with its very good quality, even fleece. Judges of the Hampshires, South Dorset Downs. Dorset Ram, Polled Dorset and South Suffolk also passed favourable comments on the standard of exhibits, although the judge of the South Suffolk section said there was a big range in quality from the leading to the “tail” entries. Pig section In the pig section Mr A. C. Jack, of Balclutha. who judged the Tamworth, Berkshire and Landrace classes, said that some of the leading entries would show very well in the Royal Show in Christchurch next month. Many exhibitors, however. showed a tendency to overcondition their entries. Mr G Timperley. of Coutts

Island, the judge of the Large White pigs, and porkers and baconers, commended the standard shown. The champion Ayrshire cow, of R E. Lay, Methven. would compare well among the leading stock in New Zealand shows, said Mr C. H. Green, of Brookside, who judged this section. The quality in this section was high.
