STADIUM OPENING

Cochrane, Dixon win (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Olympic bronze medallist, R. Dixon (Nelson), won the invitation 1500 metres and the 3000 metres, and T. ; Cochrane (Canterbury) won The invitation 100 and 200 metres races at the opening of the $400,000 Newtown Park sports stadium in Wellington on Saturday. Cochrane’s times for his races were 10.7 sec and 22.3 sec. K. Cunningham (Masterton), and Dixon ran together through the first lap of the 1500 metres in 61 sec, and then Dixon established a sizeable lead in the second lap to go through in two minutes.

Dixon’s race time of 3min 49.95ec was 6sec slower than his Wellington record. The 3000 metres, which began only 20 minutes after the 1500 metres, was the best race of the day. Dixon won by eight metres from B. Rose (Wellington) after raising a grand finishing sprint 200 metres from the tape. Dixon’s time was 18min 17.6 sec. The former holder of the women’s world mile record, Miss A. Smith (Auckland), left a strong field in her wake to win the 800 metres by 20 metres in a time of 15.9 sec.

The track was opened by the Mayor of Wellington (Sir Francis Kitts).
