AMNESTY ‘NEVER’

Nixon line on draft

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright?

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29. President Nixon, his spirits further brightened by a successful campaign trip yesterday through Ohio and Michigan, will go on radio today for the fifth in a series of campaign messages—on his defence policies. The Nixon message is expected to draw a sharp line between his political philosophy and that of his Democratic challenger, Senator McGovern. Their differences were pointed yesterday when President Nixon stopped on a road in Ohio and told the parents of a young soldier killed in Vietnam that he would never grant amnesty to young men who evaded the military draft by going to Canada or other countries.

“Don’t worry about amnesty—Never,” said the President. “A few hundred draft dodgers are never going to get amnesty from me.” Senator McGovern has said that he is in favour of amnesty for draft evaders — after the war is ended and the prisoners of war have returned home —but that he will punish deserters. He says that the President changes his stand on amnesty to suit his audience.
