Presbyterian Moderator installed
The new Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand (the Rt Rev. E. F. Farr) was installed at the opening of the Church’s General Assembly in Palmerston North on Saturday evening. He succeeds the retiring Moderator, the Rt Rev. L. H. Jenkins.
In his opening address, Mr Farr spoke on preaching. He said that much preaching in the Church today was ineffective and sterile because it was individualistic, and because people in congregations did not “go out to meet the minister." “I have at times seen that look on the faces of various members of the congregation when the text is announced, ‘Go on then, interest me,’ ” he said.
Simultaneously with the rise of advertising and a vastly improved news network, he had seen the tide sweeping out from the
Church, leaving it high and dry. Mr Farr, who is 60, was bom in Auckland. He graduated B.A. from Auckland University in 1934, and served at churches in Wellington, Timaru, and Auckland, where he now lives.
