Botanic Gardens car park

Sir, —About three years ago I wrote discribing the dustbowl that then existed in the Botanic Gardens car park, off Riccarton Avenue. Replying through your column, the Christchurch City Council then promised that some future sealing would rectify the position—but still nothing has been done. The dust situation which must be seen to be believed, is just shocking at the week-ends. One visit from the Mayor would convince him that this is no fitting entrance to our beautiful Botanic Gardens. — Yours, ” DUSTY POLLUTION. October 24, 1972.

[The Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes), replies: “It has not yet been possible to allocate funds to seal the area in question, because other areas in Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens are considered to have a higher priority. A considerable amount of formative work is necessary before the area can be sealed and it is still the intention to do so as soon as sufficient funds are available.”]
