Tunnel tolls

Sir, —I should like to ask the Road Tunnel Authority if and when it plans to, offer concessions on tolls to motorists who, like myself, use this route daily. In this day of consumer incentives I believe we are long overdue for this recognition, and accordingly am interested to hear if the authority is of a like mind. — Yours, etc., W. LEE. Lyttelton, October 24, 1972. [Mr V. G. Spiller, chairman of the Road Tunnel Authority, replies: “The question of granting concessions has been considered by the authority on several occasions. Because a large proportion of our patrons, both private and commercial are regular users, any concession would amount to a reduction in tolls. The authority’s commitments have increased substantially during recent years but whereas practically all other costs have risen, the authority’s charges have remained the same since 1966. It is therefore the opinion of the authority that by not increasing tolls, it is in fact granting a concession to all tunnel users.”]
