First run for Ansin
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) MELBOURNE. The New Zealand Melbourne Cup hope, Ansin, will make his Australian debut in the $20,000 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2600 m at Moonee Valley tomorrow in preference to the $5OOO W. S. Cox Plate (2000 m His trainer, J. Winder, decided yesterday morning that rather than run the risk of Ansin being balloted out of the Cox Plate he would accept for the Gold Cup. In the Gold Cup, Ansin will clash with fellow New Zealanders, Baghdad Note. Sir Truetone and Laurel Oaks. Baghdad Note has been in top form on the training track since arriving in Melbourne from Sydney and provided he can negotiate the tricky Moonee Valley turns, he looks well placed for victory. The Cox Plate, Australia’s richest weight for-age event, has attracted a quality field of 14, nine of the runners being bred in New Zealand.
The field is headed by Melbourne Cup hopefuls, Gay Icarus and Gunsynd, and the race will give Australian racegoers their first glimpse of the New Zealand mare. Magnifique.
