Qantas loss

(N.Z P. A .-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, Oct. 1.

Qantas, Australia’s international airline, was expected to report a loss of between $5 million and $6 million for the year up to March 31, 1972, the Sydney “Sun” newspaper reported. The “Sun” said the Australian Minister for Civil Aviation (Senator Robert Cotton) would table the company’s latest financial report in Federal Parliament within three weeks.

The “Sun” put the expected loss down to “high increases in salaries and wages coupled with the influx of charter services operating on scheduled airline routes.” If the prediction comes true it would be Qantas’s second loss since 1923, the newspaper said. In March this year, the chairman of Qantas (Sir Roland Wilson) forecast a loss for the year, but he declined to estimate the extent of the loss.
