Resignation of candidate
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Oct. 2.
The Labour candidate for Taupo, Mr J. W. Ridley, is resigning from the Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee after receiving a letter from the secretary (Mr Justice Haslam).
It is believed that Mr Ridley, a former Rhodes scholar, of Tokoroa, has been asked to resign because he intends to contest the Taupo seat. Mr Ridley said tonight: “The rules of the selection committee are interpreted by the trustees in Lon. don and it is not for me to say whether I agree with their interpretation. “It is a job I would like to do but at the present time it will be one less job and I have enough to do at the moment. It appears to me to be an unusual ruling but it is not for me to comment on it." Mr Justice Haslam, a Rhodes scholar in 1927 and a member of the selection committee since 1936, said tonight that it was not quite correct that Mr Ridley had been asked to resign but said that he could not discuss the matter any further.
