With only one game to be completed in the fifth round of the world chess championships, New Zealand is losing to Iran 2-1.

The leader of the group at the end of the fourth round is Scotland, with 12.5 points, followed by Iran, with 11.5. Completing an adjourned fourth-round game, New Zealand drew with Portugal, 2-2; Sutton drew with Duroa, and Kerr drew with Figuezredo. Jugoslavia has maintained its lead in the Group A final with an impressive win over the United States, 3-1. Its nearest rival, Hungary, trailed Sweden by one point with two matches adjourned. But the Soviet Union, surprisingly low-placed in the competition, had an easy 3|-J win against East Germany. Argentine had a hardfought match with Czechoslovakia and ended all square with two games to finish today. In Group B, England held on to its lead with a big win over Mongolia. Austria had a good day against the Philippines and Norway, the main rival of the English, is one up against Peru after a bitter struggle. Bolivia was well placed In its Group C match against Tunisia, while Mexico ended with a clear advantage over Wales. Australia was a point up against Ireland and shpuld

increase its advantage when the two adjourned matches are finished. There was a needle match in Group D between Guernsey and the Faroe Islands, in which all four games were drawn.

In the ladies’ section, England won its preliminary group and moved into the top final group, with such strong teams as the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary.
