A draw in cricket

East Christchurch-Shirley, beaten last year by Wellington and College Old Boys, had much the better of the match this year, played at the week-end.

However, the Wellington representative, J. F. M. Morrison, had an outstanding double; 146 in the first innings—the next highest score was 13 — and 62 in the second. It was the first time Morrison had batted this season.

East-Christchurch Shirley’s win was very much a team effort. But it was well led by W. C. McQueen, who deserved a century, supported by G. D. V. Pulley, who had a fine all-round match. Scores:—

East Christchurch-Shirley 304 (McQueen 96. Pulley 65, P. R. Joyce 35, J. W. Morris 27, R. B. Parlane 25; D. Alabaster 4/117) and 76/4 (Joyce 26 not out, G. Tait 24) drew with Wellington and College Old Boys 213 (Morrison 146; Pulley 4/35, R. P. M. Howell 2/45, E. C. Parsons 2/69) and 151/6 (Morrison 62, K. Burke 47; Howell 3/52, Pulley 2/28).

94-year-old at crease In another match at the weekend, Weedons held the advantage in a one-day match with a Christchurch team captained by B. G. Hadlee. During the Weedons innings, a member of 80 years, J. Hampton, aged 94, had his annual bat. Scores:—Weedons 242 (T. Williams 90, J. Meyer 33. G. Hulston 26, E. V. Chatterton 20; G. Guillen 2/16, M. G. Lester 2/22, B. G. Hadlee 2/22), Christchurch XI 199/8 (G. Guillen 58. D. R. Hadlee 54; B. Hooper 2/19, J. Currie 2/22).
