Drug ring suspected (N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, Oct. 2. Australian customs officers have been working with New Zealand and South African authorities on a suspected drug-smuggling ring. About 50 kilograms of cannabis — worth about SNZSO,OOO on the black market — was seized in Sydney on September 18. Details of the seizure were withheld until now to allow Narcotics Bureau agents to work with officials in New Zealand and South Africa.
A Sydney man, aged 23, was arrested on September 18 and charged with offences against the Customs Act after the seizure. Two customs officers at Sydney Airport became suspicious of a consignment of “personal effects” from New Zealand. The officers felt documents accompanying the consignment were suspicious. The Customs Department said yesterday its investigations were continuing.
