‘Equal pay confusion’
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. Sept. 27. Equal pay legislation would mean the most revolutionary change of all time for the retail industry, said Mr D. L. Wood, the deputy chairman of Arthur Barnett, Ltd. From all accounts, the bill at present before Parliament, was a very confusing document, he said. “To make matters worse, confusing and conflicting statements have been made as to its interpretation and its impact on the economy.
“The employers are unhappy about it and foresee grave difficulties: likewise the unions.” The Government said that costs and prices would increase only marginally, Mr Wood said. "They say the direct cost will be sBsm; employers say $166m.” Mr Wood said he hoped that before the legislation was passed there would be opportunity for debate in the House and discussion by all sectors of the community.
