Miss Gould may have infringed status

The appearance of the Australian swimmer, Miss S. Gould, in a television commercial shown nationally in Australia would be reported to the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland, said the Australian member (Mr H. Weir) in Melbourne yesterday. Miss Gould won three gold medals at the Olympic Games in Munich. Mr Weir, the chairman of the eligibility committee of the International Olympic Committee, said he would ask the committee to request a full report from the Australian Olympic Federation. He said his committee was looking into the eligibility of Miss Gould, aged 15, to compete as an amateur after the advertisement, which was used to promote a women’s magazine which is serialising a book written by Miss Gould’s mother, “Swimming the Shane Gould Way.” The advertisement was
I withdrawn on the request of I the swimmer’s father after ■ telephone calls were made to swimming officials in Sydney suggesting that her amateur ■status might be endangered. “This is normal procedure when matters of this kind come to our attention,’’ said | Mr Weir.
