Around town
Ashgrove, a three-man Christchurch group, is now resident at the Phoenix Tavern, in Papanui. The group—Robin Chadwick (lead), Tommy Corlet (drums), Peter Bracey (bass and vocals) —has been together in its present form since April. Since then Ashgrove has been appearing at Phoenix periodically, but now the group is resident at the tavern on Friday and Saturdays. It will soon also play on Thursday evening. Ashgrove play straight pop music, ideally suited to hotel work. However, it has recently included a number of heavy rock numbers and original compositions in its work.
Beam Unity, who failed to make the Golden Disc finals with “Bus Rider,” is now backing entrants in the weekly talent quest at the Blenheim Road Motor Inn.
The group has just completed a South Island tour with Craig Scott, and will appear in Timaru shortly. Although the group did not make the Golden Disc finals, it has not been disheartened. Another single is being planned and should be released by the end of the year.
