Taros, tomatoes, in tiny Tongan Ata

A fourney of just over 1500 sea miles from Haapi, in the Tongan group, seems a long way for a small (67-tons gross) steel-hulled diesel vessel to voyage to unload only 23£ tons (894 cases of bananas), plus a few taros and tomatoes, at Lyttelton. But the 83ft Australianbuilt Ata (named after a Tongan island), has done just that. She arrived at Lyttelton yestterday morning, and will them lyoad about 60 tons of carcase and cartoned mutton at Timaru for return to Tonga. The Tongan ensign is a rare sight in Lyttelton. The Ata’s 48-year-old Tongan master. Captain Mosese Haukinima, said that his command was one of three fishing vessels owned by Fathom Fisheries (Tonga) Ltd. The Ata was in Timaru only last month, and because shipping was insufficient for economic survival, the Ata was seeking fresh fields. Captain Haukinima has spent his whole seafaring life in the Pacific. The tiny Ata, which has an all-Tongan crew of 10 men, has visited Australia, Fiji, Rarotonga, and even Pitcairn. This is her first trip to Lyttelton, and yesterday, smiling Tongan girls, resident in Christchurch, sat in the sunshine aboard the Ata, talking happily in their native tongue to the visiting Tongans. They said it w r as a delightful occasion, providing firsthand news of home.

The Norwegian firm of A/S Kristian Jebsens Rederl has announced that it will begin a cutrate freight service from European ports to New Zealand next month. The service will be headed by the company’s 13,400ton bulk carrier Baugnes, a report says. Monthly sailings are planned and it is aiming to undercut Conference Line rates. Competitive rates for wool shipment from New Zealand to Europe may be offered, too. At present the company, which trades to Australia, has mineral and ore commitments to Europe from there but wool cargoes might prove complementary, the agents (Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd) say.
