Final round of table tennis
The A grade table tennis competition died peacefully last evening. Since the national championships week, interest and the standard of {day had waned considerably; last night's final round was a relief to all. Avonside IV and University could field only two members each and that contest was quickly resolved in University’s favour, although G. C. Main (Avonside) scored probably his best win for the season against Yee Chow Boi.
Avonside I, which had won the competition three rounds ago, went down 3-9 to Wallabies. Bui considering Avonside had an A reserve and B grade player In the team, it was not surprising. Ironically, it was the B grade member, J. Hanton, who fared best, beating a ranked Canterbury player, N. B. Radford and J. D. Cullington. Riccarton I held second place in the competition by beating its second team. The normallyrellable Riccarton II pair, J. Armstrong and W. D. Adamson, were both struggling to recapture their top form and dropped two singles each. Selwyn. one of the few teams to sustain its concentration to the finish, completed a clean sweep of matches, while Avonside H only just staved off Avonside 111 in the other contest, which was decided on a countback of games. The return of G. J. Rhind and L. A. Stewart, who deserves a ranking this year, swung the balance in Avonside H’s favour. However, the evening was not without its lighter moments.
Play was baited for several minutes while assorted objects were hurled at a ball lodged tn the netting in the ceiling. J. W. Yates (thrower) and P. Whittaker’s shoe proved the successful combination.
