Harbour development
Sir, —I have never lived in Governor’s Bay, nor am I likely to. But I feel bound to make known my opposition to the inevitable destruction of such a beautiful area by large-scale subdivision such as is envisaged by Mr G. P. O’Farrell. People who come to New Zealand to live because of its excellent environment and then proceed to alter it make me angry. If the so-called development of Mansons Point into 148 sections is permitted, it will be the thin edge of the wedge in opening up the entire area at the top of the harbour for subdivision. Peaceful rural areas with such magnificent scenic qualities are not so common close to Christchurch that we can permit one to be submerged in housing. The Mount Herbert County councillor who suggested that Diamond Harbour, with its extensive housing, is just at attractive as Governor’s Bay seems to have little appreciation of natural beauty.—Yours, etc. V. G. DOVE. September 27. 1972.
