12,000 gain from migration

The New Zealand population gained 12,280 from migration in the year ended June 30, according to figures released this week by the Government Statistician. This is the largest gain from migration for six years.

The net gain from migration last year was only 5211. In 1967-68 and in 1968-69 there was a net loss from migration—the only two years this apart from wartime, when departures from New Zealand have exceeded arrivals. In the following table, the net gains or losses from migration in each of the last 10 years are shown:—

The biggest change last year is shown in permanent and long-term migration: a net inflow of 10,684, com-

pared with 1966 last year. A breakdown of migration inflows and outflows is given in the following table: —
