Eveleyn Couzins Ave

Sir, —The criticism of the behaviour of cyclists in Eveleyn Couzins Avenue seems to be most unfair when you consider the nature of the road. It is winding, with a 15 m.p.h. speed limit. It is not suited as a through road for busy motor traffic from North Parade and North Avon Road, yet it is used as such. It should be closed off to through motor traffic by the use of bollards and should primarily be used by cyclists and pedestrians. It is unsuitable for cars. For the safety of the school children and residents who use it cars should be banned. Second, it is one of the finest residential streets in Christchurch because of its walkways and its avenue of trees. Its character should not be marred by noise and pollution caused by cars. Third, Eveleyn Couzins, who generously left her property for the benefit of young people, would most certainly have not wished the avenue to be turned into the busy through road which has become particularly dangerous to children. — Yours, etc., N.R.F.
