600 to sit test

About 600 senior pupils from 50 schools in Canterbury will sit a preliminary test for the Canterbury Mathematical Association’s annual senior mathematics prize on Friday. Each school will then submit up to five of its best scripts, which will be marked by a panel from the committee of the association. Tile best 10 scripts will be selected and the scholars concerned will sit a final test at the University of Canterbury, at Ham, on October 13. The finalists will be the guests of the association at lunch, and in the afternoon they will visit the firm of C. W. F. Hamilton and Company, Ltd, before the presentation of prizes. All finalists will receive a prize, and the winner will receive a $2OO cheque as well as the book prize. The total value of the prizes exceeds $5OO. This is the sixth year the Canterbury association has held the competition. Associations in Wellington and Auckland are considering similar competitions.
